It’s brief this morning.  I’ve got to prep a quilt for the long arm.  Used just under a yard of fabric used to finish up the top of my sister’s quilt.

This past week no new fabric was purchased.  I used the fabric for the backing of the Neutral Strip Twist and the center of Candy Sunflower Seeds.  I still don’t have the borders on that quilt.  The biggest thing I worked on was the crossword puzzle quilt and all that fabric has been counted – well except for a 4″ square and I’m going to count that square when I determine if I need to make more blocks.

Fabric Added last week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 86.769 yards

Fabric Used last weeks: 8.91 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 111.083 yards

Net Used for 2011: 24.314 yards

I’ve been busy this past week. The week started with quilting a couple of quilt, ended with a trip to MQS and in between I finished cutting the fabric for the crossword puzzle quilt and the neutral Strip Twist.  Half crossword background blocks are pieced, one side of the binding is stitched down on the Turning Twenty quilt and the binding on the BQ2 quilt is complete, but it still needs a label.

Meanwhile the backing for the crossword puzzle quilt came in and I picked up a few more red and neutral FQs.

Here are the numbers:

Fabric Added last week: 12 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 77.019 yards *

Fabric Used last weeks: 16 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 99.923 yards

Net Used for 2011: 22.904 yards

* I discovered a mistake in my numbers from a couple of weeks ago.  8 FQ is only 2 yards, not 4 as I previously counted it.

This was the week for quilt backs.  I made two quilt backs early in the week for this weekend’s quilting, but when I got home last night I changed my mind on what I am going to quilt this afternoon.  As a result, I made two more quilt backs.  I also made the binding for “Summertime”.  It’s still not completely sewn down.  So lots of fabric out that I’m counting this week.  I’ve got about 1/2 of the fabric cut for the Crossword Puzzle (CP) quilt, but I’m going to count it when I get it all cut.  I expect to get the rest of it cut this week and it will nicely offset the backing fabric I expect to arrive later this week and count in next weeks report.

Early in the week, I bought several more red FQs for CP, but after I got to cutting I realized I needed more and why just buy 4 FQs when you can buy 8 FQs?  Actually I ended up with 4 half yard pieces since several a couple of the pieces were $5 and  FQ were $2.50.  At this point if I don’t have enough fabric, I’m making the quilt smaller!

Here the numbers:

Fabric Added last week: 5.875 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 67.019 yards

Fabric Used last weeks: 19 yards (got to love weeks with backings)
Fabric Used to Date: 83.923 yards

Net Used for 2011: 19.904 yards

Before I get on with the stash report, I thought I’d mention the Kaw Valley Quilters’ Guild Quilt Show.  There’s one more day to attend and see the great quilts.  Sunday, May 1st, 10 AM – 5 PM at the Douglas Count Fairgrounds, Lawrence, Kansas.

Now, on to the stash report.

The good news, is I have worked on three backings this past week – The Chain Event, Turning Twenty Again and Mini Ohio Stars.  It helps counter the red and neutral fabrics I bought this week.

The red fabrics will go into the crossword puzzle quilt, the neutral into a neutral Strip Twist — provided I get that far in the next six weeks.  If not, they’ll end up in the stash.  I forgot — I also bought fabric for the backing for two more quilts.

Fabric Added last week: 14.875 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 61.144  yards

Fabric Used last weeks: 10.652 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 64.923 yards

Net Used for 2011: 3.779 yards

Forty-nine stars, 36 setting blocks, 24 side triangles, 4 corner triangles — but yet less than a yard used. That happens when you make a mini quilt. On the other hand, I stayed out of the quilt shops this past week, but have a trip planned Tuesday afternoon for backing for two more quilts and the crossword puzzle quilt.

Fabric Added the last week: 0 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 46.269 yards

Fabric Used the last weeks: .93 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 54.271 yards

Net Used for 2011: 8.002 yards

Since I was at a Retreat last week, this report covers two weeks.

A pillowcase to go with the Dresden Plate quilt, handing sleeves for 4 quilts, finished the red, white & blue twin mystery quilt top and the rest of the letters for the Crossword Puzzle quilt – just over 9 1/2 yards out.

The inbound fabric includes backing for two quilts, a piece of fabric which leaped into my arms and said “take me home”, FQs from my Secret Sister, and more fabric for the mini quilt which I still haven’t finished – just over 13 yards in.

The good news is I’m still a head of the game (more out than in overall).

Fabric Added the last two weeks: 13.175 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 46.269 yards

Fabric Used the last two weeks: 9.58 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 53.341 yards

Net Used for 2011: 7.072 yards

I’ve still used more fabric than I’ve brought into the house year-to-date, but the difference has shrunk considerably.  Last week I picked up the backings for two of the “7 by July” quilts, and since they were wide backings I did a bit of math to figure out the 42/45″ wide yardage equivalence.    The only fabric used was the backing for the borders of the Dresden Plate quilt which I have finished quilting.

Fabric Added this Week: 14.4 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 33.094 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 2.16 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 43.791 yards

Net Used for 2011: 10.667 yards

The week started off with shopping in my friend’s fabric closet.  I don’t have many batiks and this was a great way to get my feet wet, so to speak.  I have a project in mind, but by the time I get that far, I may change my mind once or twice.  The other fabric purchase was backing for one of the quilts I have to get done this Spring.

On the usage front, I pulled a piece of vintage fabric to back my pink & blue baby Carolina Christmas.  I have way more fabric than I need in the backing, since it was only 36″ wide.  But I only counted what I would have used had it been 40-45″ wide.  I’ll trim off the rest and put it back in the stash after I get it quilted.

I also made the backing for the Dragonfly quilt and got it pinned to the leaders.  The plan is to quilt the baby quilt and get my design down before tackling the big quilt.  I decided to play it safe and go with the Rosetta Stone thread (dark silver, charcoal, & light silver).  I’ll use white bobbin thread.  I also purchased a spool of King Tut white thread for the baby quilt so the tension should be close as I transition from one quilt to the other.

My machine went into the shop Friday morning after I sewed the seam on the Dragonfly backing.  Saturday night I pulled Miss Genie out and made a sample Twisting Star block.  This will go with my red, white & blue shop hop blocks I picked up a two years ago.  Mustn’t rush in to anything.

Fabric Added this Week: 10.5 yards
Fabric Added to Date: 18.694 yards

Fabric Used this Week: 7.125 yards
Fabric Used to Date: 41.601 yards

Net Used for 2011: 22.907 yards

More may have come in this week than gone out, but I’m still a head of the game for the year, with less fabric on the shelf – meaning more quilts to be used and loved.
